PRODUCT FEATURES Professional, waterproof compass designed for military use, withstands the most extreme hot and cold conditions. Zero Index line. Ultra-resistant aluminum casing. With metal ring. 360-degree line of sight. 360-degree rotating dial. Kilometer and inch scale. HOW TO USE: This compass is specially designed to mark bearings to distant points and follow the direction, minimizing error. To determine the bearing to reach a visible point on the terrain (a peak, for example), simply point the compass towards your destination and read the degrees indicated by the bearing line. These compasses are therefore best suited for navigation on the ground and not for use with maps. It consists of two main parts: A housing or casing that, when unfolded, indicates the direction to take. A graduated, watertight capsule containing the magnetic needle. First, we need to "sight" the compass, that is, point it towards our destination. To do this, unfold the compass until the lid is at a 90° angle to its base. Hold it by placing your thumb over the ring (the same ring used to close the compass when it's folded), raise it to your face, and, resting your hand on your cheekbone, point it towards the place you want to travel to or whose bearing you want to determine. To make this easier, the compass lid has an opening with a thin wire running lengthwise through it, known as the azimuth wire (see the first image in the article). The lens mount also has a vertical notch. To obtain the greatest accuracy when determining your bearing, simply align these three elements: the place you are traveling to or whose bearing you want to determine, the azimuth wire, and the notch on the lens lid. At this point, we must be very careful to keep the compass horizontal and wait for the magnetic needle to stabilize properly. Any movement or tilting will result in an inaccurate bearing reading. Finally, we simply need to read the degrees on the circle below the direction line painted on the glass covering the magnetic needle. To facilitate this reading, these compasses come with a small lens (which incorporates the notch we mentioned earlier) so that, when sighting the compass, we can easily read the degrees below the direction line. Once this process is complete, we will know the bearing we need to follow to reach our destination, which will be very useful when we temporarily lose sight of it, whether because it is hidden by some kind of geographical feature, forest, or due to loss of visibility caused by fog, among other factors. If this happens, simply take out the compass, hold it horizontally in your hand, and rotate your entire body until the graduated circle below the direction line indicates the memorized bearing.
